From the storm’s origins in the tropics to its devastating impact on Ontario—Hazel remains a sobering reminder of nature’s power and our community’s resilience. 💧💪

📚Hot off the printing press after six years in the making—and just in time to commemorate #KingTownship’s 175th anniversary, the KTHS proudly debuted The History of King Township: A Community Shaped by the Land at a book launch event Thursday at the King Township Municipal Centre. 🎉

“In this digital age, it’s heartwarming to see a crowd of nearly 200 gather for the launch of a 476-page printed hardcover history book,” said proud author and longtime King resident Ann Love, who wrote the book with dedicated researcher Sharon Bentley, retired Deputy Chief Librarian of King Public Library. “It’s no door stopper, it’s a Showstopper!”

The celebratory event featured book signings, light refreshments, author presentations and dramatic readings by ASK actor Laura Martini, who read a letter from Phoebe Lloyd, and ASK President, Michele McNally, who read Merelda Campbell’s letter to her brother Earl on the WW1 front, as well as remarks from @mayorpellegrini who returned the original manuscript after being one of the first to read the book.

This magnificent historical narrative traces the interrelationship of the natural and cultural heritage of our Township – how the land shaped the people, and the people shaped the land – from the end of the Ice Age to the beginning of the 21st century. A long and storied history that would make a wonderful addition to every household in King!

Members of KTHS spent a wonderful afternoon @mcmichaelgallery yesterday listening to Toronto-based conceptual artist Derek Sullivan talk about the opening of his “Field Notes” exhibition.

Derek’s signature large-scale drawings were inspired by his year-long site study of American sculptor Richard Serra’s 1970 “Shift” landart work located in a former potato field here in King.

Derek has helped us rediscover this hidden yet crumbling gem, one of only two works that Serra ever created in concrete.

Thank you to our friends at the McMichael Gallery for hosting us yesterday for this fascinating discussion! We encourage everyone to go see the exhibit on through June!

Members of KTHS spent a wonderful afternoon @mcmichaelgallery yesterday listening to Toronto-based conceptual artist Derek Sullivan talk about the opening of his “Field Notes” exhibition.

Derek’s signature large-scale drawings were inspired by his year-long site study of American sculptor Richard Serra’s 1970 “Shift” landart work located in a former potato field here in King.

Derek has helped us rediscover this hidden yet crumbling gem, one of only two works that Serra ever created in concrete.

Attend the KHCC’s “Artifact Roadshow” Tuesday, May 28 from 6:30-8:30 pm for museum tips and tricks to care for items at home from: metals and silverware, leather, ceramic, paper, natural fibres and fur, and more!

This workshop will provide you with museum-grade advice for practical use at home. For the later half of the workshop, bring an item from your antiques or vintage collection to explore its unique history; and, specific care instructions to preserve it for the future. Our museum staff will work with you one-on-one to share its secrets and conservation tips!

On behalf of the KTHS, we extend our sincere thanks to Steven Dengler for giving such an inspirational talk on Sunday about his Canada 150 Global Odyssey circumnavigating the globe with his father, Bob Dengler, from July 1 - August 17, 2017. The father-son co-pilots flew 36,956 km with 92 stops in 14 countries over 48 elapsed days and 30 flying days.🌏

Together in Bob's Canadian-made Bell 429 twin engine helicopter, they visited every Canadian province and territory, as well as landmarks across the world spotlighting notable achievements and events from Canada’s amazing history; a fitting way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation!🇨🇦

Steven’s talk was absolutely riveting and his and his father's achievement, nothing short of remarkable. @c150go has since been recognized as the “First Canadian Circumnavigation in Helicopter, an FAI Exceptional Air Sports Performance, and set the Guinness World Record™ for First Father and Son to Circumnavigate the World by Aircraft.”

Proceeds raised supported True Patriot Love Foundation which assists Canadian veterans and families, and Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.👏🚁👏🌎

It was also a time of great strides for women in aviation, which resulted in a large RCAF Women's Division. It’s been a while since we’ve last updated our King Township and Historical Society (KTHS) donors and members about our History of King book project. As you may recall, we achieved our fundraising goal two years ago and had publicized a projected publication date of Fall 2020 when COVID-19 caught the world by surprise.

The Society and Kelly Mathews have mutually agreed to terminate their Original Contract for a publication on the history of King Township. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and for reasons beyond anyone's control, several unexpected realities have made completing the project extremely challenging, to the point where it is now closing on two years past the original scheduled end-date of September 2020. This amicably made decision to mutually terminate the Original Contract enables the Society to pursue other options for the project.

While the decision to mutually terminate the original contract was not what we had hoped for, the good news is that the book project is moving forward under new authorship. We have arrived at a highly agreeable and exciting alternative for two current KTHS members, Ann Love and Sharon Bentley, to help see this project to completion as originally envisioned by the KTHS Board.

Sharon Bentley is the retired Deputy Chief Librarian of King Township Library where she worked for 35 years supporting readers and researchers and has recently spearheaded the intensive project of moving the historical works and timeline for King online for our 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Ann Love is the author of more than 30 published books, many having been nominated for or received awards, including most recently Pandemic Survival: It’s Why You’re Alive and Rewilding: Giving Nature a Second Chance. Ann is also a long-time resident of King Township.

This talented and experienced writing/research duo has teamed up over the last couple of years to produce several heritage pieces for MOSAiC magazine, including a story on the Schomberg Railroad coming out this June.

They are anxious to get started and we look forward to seeing what they produce. Stay tuned for future updates!

It’s been a while since we’ve last updated our King Township and Historical Society (KTHS) donors and members about our History of King book project. As you may recall, we achieved our fundraising goal two years ago and had publicized a projected publication date of Fall 2020 when COVID-19 caught the world by surprise.

The Society and Kelly Mathews have mutually agreed to terminate their Original Contract for a publication on the history of King Township. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and for reasons beyond anyone's control, several unexpected realities have made completing the project extremely challenging, to the point where it is now closing on two years past the original scheduled end-date of September 2020. This amicably made decision to mutually terminate the Original Contract enables the Society to pursue other options for the project.

While the decision to mutually terminate the original contract was not what we had hoped for, the good news is that the book project is moving forward under new authorship. We have arrived at a highly agreeable and exciting alternative for two current KTHS members, Ann Love and Sharon Bentley, to help see this project to completion as originally envisioned by the KTHS Board.

Sharon Bentley is the retired Deputy Chief Librarian of King Township Library where she worked for 35 years supporting readers and researchers and has recently spearheaded the intensive project of moving the historical works and timeline for King online for our 50th-anniversary celebrations.

To kick off its 50th anniversary year, the King Township Historical Society held a Commemorative Tree Dedication Ceremony last Sunday at the King Heritage & Cultural Centre to properly unveil three Sugar Maple memorial trees funded by KTHS.

One is in memory of Heather Robertson (1942-2014), celebrated author and President of KTHS from 2012-2014. The other is in memory of Fiona Cowles (1939-2013), volunteer extraordinaire and lifetime member of KTHS. The third is in honour of the volunteers and supporters of the KTHS since its founding in 1972.

More than 50 members and friends came out on a chilly spring day, including members of Heather's family and Fiona's daughter, Mayor Pellegrini, Councillor Debbie Schaefer and MP for King-Vaughan, Anna Roberts. Bill Foran, former KTHS President from 1979-1981, was our guest speaker and regaled the 50 plus members in attendance, with stories and history of the KTHS.

Coffee and tea were served in Laskay Hall following remarks, along with a 50th anniversary cake provided by Dorio's Bakery in Kettleby. It was wonderful to be back in person after more than two years!
